When Students Broadcast Their Learning: What the Podcasting Classroom Tells Us About Voice, Literacy, and Assessment

A student who struggles to write a paragraph about what she learned this week might speak about it fluently for ten minutes. A student who freezes on a test might nail an interview with a local expert. Podcasting creates a different kind of evidence of learning, and more schools are building programs to capture it.

Mercer Island High School in Washington launched its radio and podcasting program about seven years ago, building around KMIH 88.9 FM The Bridge, the district’s FCC-licensed radio station. Students there work with Adobe Audition for audio editing, use Zoom to conduct interviews, and record both audio and video versions of their work. In early 2026, the school converted nearby office space into a dedicated podcasting studio for just under $3,000. Bradley County Schools in Cleveland, Tennessee, runs a similar program through its Partnerships in Industry and Education Innovation Center, where students work with professional mixers, streaming cameras, and production software. These are not outliers anymore. They represent a growing recognition that the skills behind broadcasting, research, scripting, interviewing, and audio production, translate directly into academic and career outcomes.

The question for most educators is not whether podcasting is valuable. The research is clear: student podcasting improves literacy and supports critical thinking. The more pressing question is what teachers outside dedicated broadcast programs can actually do with this, and whether you need a $3,000 studio to get there.

What Podcasting Builds That a Worksheet Cannot

Alfonso Mendoza Jr., founder of the My EdTech Life podcast and currently a teaching and learning coordinator at Kami, points to something teachers often feel but struggle to name: some students are better at demonstrating knowledge through voice than through writing, and the two are not the same skill. “I had a lot of students, especially emerging bilingual students, who may not be strong writers but are wonderful orators,” Mendoza says. “Podcasting is something different.”

That distinction matters enormously in a standards-aligned classroom. Verbal fluency, research skills, and the ability to organize and communicate ideas are all assessed through traditional writing assignments, but writing also filters out students who are still developing English grammar or who process ideas more naturally through speech. A spoken-word assignment levels some of that playing field without lowering expectations. The content requirement stays the same. The format changes.

Josh Morris, Innovation Specialist at Bradley County Schools and co-host of The Tech Flush, a podcast for educators, describes the learning mechanism clearly: “Podcasting is a great way to reflect on knowledge. They think about and voice those thoughts out loud. It’s another way of processing information; sometimes you gain a deeper understanding.”

This is not a claim that podcasting replaces writing instruction. Students still need to write. But verbal processing works alongside written processing, and for a meaningful portion of students in any classroom, it works better as a first pass. Teachers who have used Socratic seminars or think-alouds already know this. Podcasting just gives that verbal processing a product at the end.

Natalie Woods, broadcast media instructor at KMIH, frames the skill set in terms of career readiness: “Students develop skills to formulate an introduction, perform background research, make an interview sound great on the airwaves.” Those skills, structuring an argument, sourcing credible information, and communicating clearly to an audience, sit at the heart of any rigorous curriculum, not just journalism or broadcasting.

What This Looks Like Without a Full Studio

Schools like MIHS and Bradley County invested in professional-grade setups, and those setups matter for broadcast-specific programs. But a classroom teacher does not need a mixing board or sound panels to give students meaningful podcasting experiences.

A Chromebook or laptop with a basic USB microphone (available for $30 to $50) and free software like Audacity or the browser-based Adobe Audition alternative handles most of what a general education classroom needs. Zoom recordings, which MIHS already uses for interviews, require no extra hardware. The production quality of a student-created podcast does not need to match a professional broadcast. What it does need is a clear purpose: What question is this episode answering? Who is the audience? What does the listener walk away knowing?

Teachers piloting podcasting for the first time often find success starting with a simple structure: a short introduction, two to three main points, and a closing summary, recorded once and lightly edited. That alone requires a student to understand the material well enough to teach it, which is one of the highest-order learning tasks in any taxonomy.

For schools exploring this more seriously, the MIHS model offers a practical benchmark. The school’s sub-$3,000 studio conversion shows that a functional professional-grade space is within reach for many districts as a one-time capital investment, particularly if a CTE or media arts program can anchor it.

Where Podcasting Connects to Existing Work

Broadcasting programs tend to live in CTE departments, journalism classes, or electives. That placement can leave the medium underused in core content areas, where the literacy and critical thinking benefits are most needed.

Social studies teachers have clear entry points: students can interview community members about local history, summarize current events for a peer audience, or debate a policy question in a structured two-voice format. Science teachers can have student teams explain a lab finding or interview a scientist using Zoom. English teachers can use podcast episodes as an alternative to the five-paragraph essay for certain analytical tasks.

The bilingual learner angle deserves specific attention. For students designated as English Language Learners or enrolled in bilingual programs, verbal production assignments create a more accurate picture of content mastery. A student who understands photosynthesis but cannot yet write about it at grade level in English can often explain it fluently in a recorded episode, especially if they can prepare in advance. That preparation, scripting, rehearsing, and revising speech the way a writer revises text, is itself rigorous academic work.

What Administrators Should Think About

If a school is considering launching a formal broadcasting program, a few structural choices make a significant difference. Connecting the studio to a CTE pathway, as Bradley County did through its Innovation Center, creates a clear funding mechanism and a career-connected rationale that tends to survive budget cycles better than standalone electives. Tying the program to community radio, as MIHS did through KMIH, creates a real audience and real accountability for student work, both of which raise the quality ceiling considerably.

For schools not ready for a full program, even designating a shared space with basic equipment gives teachers a resource to point to. Morris actively encouraged more teachers at Bradley County to use the recording studio by inviting students to demonstrate knowledge verbally rather than only in writing. That kind of open-door policy from an Innovation Specialist or media teacher can extend the reach of existing infrastructure without additional budget.

Teacher training matters here. Most educators were not taught to design audio-based assessments, and they do not know what “good” sounds like in a student podcast. Professional development that walks teachers through the production process, including one short recording session where they make a podcast themselves, tends to lower the barrier more than any equipment purchase.

A Different Kind of Evidence

The schools building broadcasting programs have figured out something that research backs up: when students produce for an audience, they work harder and think more carefully. The audience does not have to be thousands of listeners. It can be the class next door, parents, or the school community. What matters is that the work goes somewhere real.

For educators already stretched thin, podcasting is worth considering as a selective addition to the toolkit, not a wholesale replacement for anything. Pick one unit where verbal processing would strengthen student understanding. Start with two students, one microphone, and a clear question to answer. See what comes back. The results often surprise teachers who assumed their quietest students had the least to say.
